Tadpole Update

6/30 Update: Dr. Peter Ducey from SUNY Cortland graciously responded to our request for tadpole ID, indicating that likely candidates are wood frogs and american toads. I’m quite sure they’re not toads due to the shapes of the egg masses, so we’re left with wood frogs, one of my initial guesses. I found a [...]

Reviving My Senses – Touch

I was surprised when touch turned out to be the most difficult sense for me to portray pictorially. I did my best, and I’ll love to see YOUR representations.

Lamb’s ear (Stachys)

This garden plant got its common name from both the look and feel of its soft, fuzzy leaves. Although it’s far [...]

Reviving My Senses – Sound

I found sound challenging to capture in a silent, still photo. You be the judge of how well I did.

Tadpole Tales

Tadpoles – captured momentarily for this photo opp

There’s a ditch near my house that is home to MANY tadpoles. I stop and watch them every day on my walk. Earlier in the season I would have told you that they were probably either wood frog or peeper tadpoles since I saw both [...]

Robins Raise a Family

I had three pairs of robins make nests in various places on my house this spring. Two of them were tucked into nooks on my front porch. It was a bit of a problem, since the robins were understandably distressed when I sat on my porch. I know it’s silly, but I modified my [...]

Reviving My Senses – Taste

Spring offers so many local delicacies, from wild food foraging to garden bounty.

Lettuce

A BEAUTIFUL head of organic lettuce from my weekly share at Canticle Farm. If you’re not already a shareholder, consider it. The veggies are amazing!

Farm fresh eggs

Our own Susan Avery recently got some laying hens. [...]

Reviving My Senses – Smell

It’s a bit trickier to capture smell in a photograph. Some of these scents I’m sure you’ll know, others may not be as familiar. If you have a chance, let your nose wander by these olfactory lovelies at the right time of day. You’ll be glad you did.

Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata)

[...]

Reviving My Senses – Sight

A picture is worth a thousand words. I can’t add anything worthwhile.

Canadian Columbine (aquilegia canadensis)

Japanese Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles japonica)

Purple-leafed Ninebark (Physocarpus opifolius Diablo)

The above photo doesn’t capture the beauty of this bush, but check out the closeup of one of its flower heads below.
