September

9th- Fields of Gold, Getting to Know Goldenrod   Start Time: 10 am  program Length: 2 hrs.

When Sting released his classic “Fields of Gold” he was referring to fields of ripening barley. But if he were here in Western New York late summer, it would be hard not to apply that phrase to the expansive lush bounty of yellow gracing the roadsides and fields.  The predominate yellow flower is Goldenrod…not one, but up to fifteen different species of Goldenrod in our area. They contribute to the rich summer ecosystem. Take a walk with Pfeiffer Nature Center and explore this important and beautiful plant. The walk will include an introduction to basic botanical terms, how to use a plant identification key, hands-on experience identifying several species of Goldenrods, and a bit of fact, folklore, and fiction about this summertime beauty.   This event will be held at Pfeiffer Nature Center, Eshelman Property 1420 Yubadam Rd., Portville, NY 14770.  Fee:  Free for members and children under 13, $5 for non-members.  Minors must be accompanied by an adult.  Register by 4pm Thursday, September 7th.  To register, click on “Register for our program online” above or contact the office at 716-933-0187.   Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way Funding.  Pfeiffer Nature Center where science, art & nature come together.

23rd-  4 Seasons Photo Contest and Cabin Open House Time: 12-2 pm

Pfeiffer Nature Center is pleased to announce our photography contest and show!  There are four categories for entries:  Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer!  This contest is open to all ages. For persons under 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the contest agreement form for participation.  All submissions must be photographed at Pfeiffer Nature Center property.  Despite these being “time of year” themes, you may photograph any landscape, natural element, structure, or people enjoying nature!  Macro Mushrooms or sweeping landscapes are equally welcome.  Plants, animals, birds, trees, landscapes, etc…  If it’s in nature at Pfeiffer, it’s good!  Simply enter the category based on what time of year you snapped your photo.  You do not need to submit a photo to attend the show and Cabin Open House.  This event is free and open to the public. Entry forms and details on deadlines of submission of both digital and printed photos can be found on our website under the ‘4 Seasons Photo Contest’ tab.”   This event will be held at Pfeiffer Nature Center, 1974 Lillibridge Road, Portville, NY 14770.  Minors must be accompanied by an adult.  Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way Funding.  Pfeiffer Nature Center where science, art & nature come together.

28th- The Beauty of Bats  Program Start Time: 10 am  Program Length: 1.5 hrs.

While it is a fact that bats rank very high on the list of most disliked species, it is also a fact that bats are greatly misunderstood.   Bats are not the creepy, scary and vicious animals they are sometimes made out to be.  Folks who love animals know that all animals deserve to be treated with kindness and bats are no exception.  Join us for this entertaining and enlightening talk as we explore the world of bats.  We will discover how necessary, beneficial and wonderful bats are to have as friends and neighbors. This event is will be held at The Portville Free Library, 1 North Main Street, Portville, New York 14770.  Fee:  Free for members, $5 for non-members and free for children 13 and under.  Minors must be accompanied by an adult.  Register by 4 PM, Thursday, October 26th, 2017.   To register, click on “Register for our program online” above or contact the office at 716-933-0187.   Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way funding.  Pfeiffer Nature Center where science, art & nature come together.
