January

1st- 3rd Annual New Year’s Day Hike for Your Health       Hike Start Time: 10 am    Hike Length: 1 hr.

Looking for a great way to bring in the New Year with nature minded friends?  Then join us on our 3rd annual winter’s day hike at Pfeiffer Nature Center! The hike will be moderately strenuous- which, in terms of exercise means you will be able to talk but not sing during the activity.  The trek is NOT an interpretive hike so stops will not be made along the trails.  Any sharing of information will occur as casual, friendly banter amongst the participants.   This hike will take place at the Lillibridge Preserve.  1974 Lillibridge Rd., Portville.  The hike is free to the public and will take place rain or shine.  The hike will be canceled if we are experiencing extreme weather conditions. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. 13th- A Brief Natural History of the Niagara River and Niagara Falls.                                                                            Program Start Time: 10:30 am   Program Length: 1 hr.

Pfeiffer Nature Center is pleased to host nature enthusiast, Tim Baird as he shares his knowledge of the “new” 8th wonder of the world.  This program looks into the geology of the Niagara River region and the formation of the Niagara Gorge and Niagara Falls.  Details in the presentation may be new to the casual visitor to Niagara Falls and will aid in the appreciation of this truly unique region. This event will be held at The Portville Free Library, 1 North Main Street, Portville, New York 14770.  Fee:  Free for members, $5 for non-members and free for children 13 and under.  Minors must be accompanied by an adult.  Register by 4 PM, Thursday, January 11th, 2018.  To register,  click on “Register for our programs on line” above or contact the office at 716-933-0187.  Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way funding.  Pfeiffer Nature Center where science, art & nature come together.

 

20th & 21st-Pfeiffer Fun at the Olean Outdoor Show          Saturday, January 20th  10-5 pm and Sunday, January 21st  10-3 pm.

Mark your calendar for the 9th annual Greater Olean Area Outdoor & Rec Sports Show.  Tickets for the event are available for purchase through Pfeiffer Nature Center.  For more information contact Pfeiffer Nature Center Administration Office 716-933-0187.  Be sure to stop by our booth at the show to discover what upcoming nature adventures and activities are in store for you this winter season. February 

 3rd _ Exploring Winter!  Program Start Time: 10 am.  Program Length: 1.5 hrs.

Snowshoe hares have oversized feet which enable them to move quickly on top of the snow’s surface.  Come try out your snowshoeing skills on the white powder of the Lillibridge Preserve!  Bring your own snowshoes or borrow a pair of traditional snowshoes from us when you visit Pfeiffer Nature Center’s winter wonderland.  This walk is for both the novice and advanced alike.  If there is no snow, join us for a winter stroll among the trees in the old growth forest.  This event will be held at:  Lillibridge Preserve, 1974 Lillibridge Road, Portville, NY 14770.  This program is FREE to the public.  There is no fee to borrow traditional snowshoes but they are in limited supply so contact Pfeiffer Nature Center to reserve your pair by Thursday, February 1st.  The traditional snowshoes are one size fits all and are recommended for ages 13 and up.  Minors must be accompanied by an adult.   To make reservations for snowshoes,  click on “Register for our programs on line” above or contact the office at 716-933-0187.  Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way funding.  Pfeiffer Nature Center where science, art & nature come together.

 

17th- Bluebird Nest Box and Squirrel Corn Cob Feeder Building

Program Start Time:  10 am-11 am OR 11 am-12 noon   Program length: 1 hour per time slot

Spring is just around the corner which means our wild animal friends will soon be looking to start new families.  If you would like to attract wildlife to your yard join us in building a bluebird box or a squirrel corn cob feeder OR BOTH!   Birding expert Tim Baird will be on hand to answer questions about these amazing animals.  Craftsmen Joe Leo and Craig Myers will lead the construction activities. This program will take place at the Home Depot, Olean.   Pre-registration is required and can be done through Pfeiffer Nature Center by 4 pm, Thursday, February 15th.  Reservations are limited and are on a “first come first serve basis”.  Program fee: $10 per nest box or squirrel feeder and group of builders (1-3 participants per group).  Children must be accompanied by adults.  To register,  click on “Register for our programs on line” above or contact the office at 716-933-0187.  Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way funding.  Pfeiffer Nature Center where science, art & nature come together.
