Portville NY, home of Pfeiffer Nature Center, is located in the heart of the enchanted mountains.\u00a0 The Nature Center reaches out to visitors from the Allegany, Cattaraugus, and McKean county areas and welcomes those from points beyond.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here are a few spots we like to frequent in the twin tiers and hope you may enjoy visiting them as well. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Where we like to eat…<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We love making a home cooked meal with fresh veggies from Canticle Farm<\/span><\/a><\/span> Community Supported Agriculture.\u00a0 They sell shares as well as have a fresh produce stand at their farm.\u00a0 Our local restaurants in Portville include…

Sprague’s Maple Farms<\/span><\/a><\/span> is the place for pancakes and local maple syrup. Locals know they are the source for fresh turkeys available at Thanksgiving!\u00a0 They are located about 5 minutes from either of our properties and make a great stop to either load up on the carbs before a long hike or feed a famished crowd when you’ve walked longer than expected in our beautiful woods!\u00a0 1048 Route 305 N, Portville, NY 14770 716-933-6637<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cool spots to visit…<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rock City Park<\/span><\/a><\/span>, what a place to climb gigantic boulders and take in a spectacular view of the area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cutco Cutlery<\/span><\/a><\/span> & Zippo<\/span><\/a><\/span> are two internationally known manufacturers in the area.\u00a0 Both have visitor centers with intriguing displays and goodies for purchase.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Portville Historical Society<\/span><\/a><\/span> and the Eldred World War II Museum<\/span><\/a><\/span> provide great glimpses into the past.\u00a0 We’ve always found them staffed with knowledgeable friendly volunteers.

Great places to hike…<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our area has an abundance of public forests.\u00a0 The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has many locations in Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties to explore the diverse ecological systems of a post glacial landscape. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some of our favorite outdoor sites in Allegany County include the Nature Conservancy’s Moss Lake<\/span><\/a><\/span>, an awesome spot to see a glacial kettle lake.\u00a0 Hanging Bog<\/span><\/a><\/span> in Black Creek is a quiet place to paddle and walk.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In Cattaraugus County we like to visit the forests managed by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation State Forests<\/span><\/a> <\/span>– Rock City State Forest (home of Little Rock City), McCarthy Hill State Forest, Golden Hill State Forest, and of course… the beautiful Zoar Valley River Gorge.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Other unique sites in Cattaraugus include the Buffalo Audubon’s Allenburg Bog Preserve<\/span><\/a><\/span> and its neighbor Zaepfel Nature Center<\/span>.<\/span><\/a>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Right in our backyard we have Allegany State Park<\/span><\/a><\/span>, with miles of forest and water ways to explore. The North Country National Scenic Trail<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and our local subpart, the Finger Lakes Trail Conference<\/span><\/a><\/span> , provide well marked trails that cross through Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. \u00a0 To the south, in McKean County, PA,\u00a0 is the amazing Allegheny National Forest<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and the Kinzua area<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 The PA Wilds<\/span><\/a><\/span> website will open the doors to the endless possibilities to explore in our neighboring state.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We love to hike the trails surrounding Bradford, PA.\u00a0 Check out the giant trees around the Marilla Reservoir and associated trails in the Tuna Valley Trail System<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Genesee Valley Greenway Trail<\/span> <\/span><\/a>is also fun to hike.\u00a0 At 84 miles long, most people choose to do a section at a time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nature people we like to hike with and nature places we like to visit…<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Are you looking for a group to cross country ski, snowshoe, or hike with? \u00a0These groups organize outings on our properties: \u00a0Olean Area Hiking Group<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Southern Tier Greenway Hiking<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Susquehannock Trail Club<\/span><\/a><\/span> in Coudersport, part of the Keystone Trails Association<\/span><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0 maintains 85 miles of the Susquehannock Trail System which passes thought the beautiful forests of Susquehannock State Forest and Sproul State Forest.\u00a0 They offer a comprehensive schedule of hikes and programs of varying challenge and interest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jamestown, NY is a haven for birders.\u00a0 It’s home to the Roger Tory Peterson Institute<\/span><\/a><\/span> and their annual birding festival and the Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary<\/span><\/a><\/span>, which offers ongoing year-round programming on birds and nature.\u00a0\u00a0 Both sites provide inspiration with gardens that use native plants and are designed to attract wildlife.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For local birding we work with the Cattaraugus County Bird Study Club<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 They provide the free bird walks at the Nature Center in May.\u00a0 They have regular meetings and field trips for birders in the local area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For interesting walks and help identifying wildflowers, we rely on the volunteers of the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 The group is an affiliate of the Buffalo Museum of Science. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
