I have always enjoyed watching birds.\u00a0 They would fascinate me as a young child.\u00a0 I would spend time watching them eat from our feeder outside of our kitchen window.\u00a0 One of my fondest memories of my grandfather is when he “taught” me how to feed the chickadees from my hand.\u00a0 It was an amazing experience for me as a young girl.<\/p>\n

Ithaca, NY<\/em>\u2014The\u00a0Celebrate Urban Birds<\/a> project at the\u00a0Cornell Lab of Ornithology is launching a contest to capture memorable encounters with birds. The goal is to\u00a0show some of the ways birds interact\u00a0with\u00a0each other,\u00a0with humans, or with\u00a0other creatures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Entries can be in the form of a story,\u00a0a photo, artwork,\u00a0video, poetry, sculpture or any other creative art. Participants just need to show birds interacting\u00a0in fun, interesting, or captivating ways.

\n<\/span>“For example, you might see a House Sparrow trying to grab a sandwich at the park,” says project leader Karen\u00a0Purcell. “Maybe\u00a0a crow is teasing your dog or hummingbirds are dueling over who gets dibs on the nectar feeder. That’s the sort of close encounter we’d like to see.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Prizes include binoculars, bird feeders, sound CDs, books, and much more. The first 50 entrants receive a copy of the Cornell Lab’s \u201cDoves and Pigeons\u201d poster by Julie Zickefoose. Selected entries will also be featured in the 2012 Celebrate Urban Birds calendar.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

How to enter:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Email entries to urbanbirds@cornell.edu<\/a>. If you submit a video, post it on YouTube and send the link.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Write “CloseEncounter_yourfirstname yourlastname_yourstate” in the subject line.<\/p>\n

3. Include both your mailing address and the location where you saw the bird(s) in your email.<\/p>\n

4. Explain why you submitted your entry and what it shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

5. One entry per person, please.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Read the terms of agreement<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
