{"id":249,"date":"2009-07-02T12:57:09","date_gmt":"2009-07-02T17:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/?p=249"},"modified":"2009-07-02T12:59:12","modified_gmt":"2009-07-02T17:59:12","slug":"american-chestnuts-planted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/2009\/07\/american-chestnuts-planted\/","title":{"rendered":"American Chestnuts Planted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pfeiffer Nature Center<\/a> is happy to to join an established partnership between the NY Chapter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acf.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">American Chestnut Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cornell University<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwtf.org\/\" target= \"_blank\">National Wild Turkey Federation <\/a>to reintroduce the American Chestnut.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_250\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-250\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/cabin-1940s-west-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Pfeiffer family cabin, 1940s\" title=\"chestnut-cabin\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-250\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pfeiffer family cabin, 1940s<\/figcaption><\/figure>Once called Queen of the Forest, 1 in every 4 trees in northeastern forests was an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Chestnut\" table= \"_blank\">American Chestnut<\/a>.  Chestnuts were an important source of food for farm animals and people alike, and the wood was prized for everything from fence posts to ship masts.  Then the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appalachianwoods.com\/appalachianwoods\/history_of_the_american_chestnut.htm\" target= \"_blank\">Chestnut blight<\/a> hit, killing all but a handful of trees in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The American Chestnut tree has a particular significance for Pfeiffer Nature Center, since that&#8217;s what our historic log cabin is made from.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-253\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/planting-chestnuts-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Volunteers planting chestnuts\" title=\"planting-chestnuts\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-253\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers planting chestnuts<\/figcaption><\/figure>So when we had the chance to plant some unmodified American Chestnut seedlings on our Lillibridge Road property, we jumped at it.  It&#8217;s true that these seedlings are likely to succumb to the blight, which remains active in the soil, but with a little luck, these trees will produce fruit before they die, and with <em>even more<\/em> luck, some of their fruit will produce blight-resistant trees.  <\/p>\n<p>On May 22 volunteers Jeff McMullen and Josh White planted 9 saplings around the upper meadow on our Lillibridge property.
