{"id":2636,"date":"2013-03-23T17:04:48","date_gmt":"2013-03-23T21:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/?p=2636"},"modified":"2013-03-24T20:54:27","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T00:54:27","slug":"birds-on-the-move-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/2013\/03\/birds-on-the-move-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Birds On The Move Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I hereby declare today Birds On The Move Day. \u00a0I just (4:00PM) went out with my dog to get the mail, and was extremely fortunate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"red-winged blackbird\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/PHOTO\/LARGE\/red_winged_blackbird_glamour.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"189\" \/> There in the trees at the bottom of my driveway was a small flock &#8211; I&#8217;d guess about 20 individuals, both male &amp; female &#8211; of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/red-winged_blackbird\/id\" target=\"_blank\">Red-winged Blackbirds<\/a>. \u00a0Personally, I&#8217;ve never seen more than a few of these lovelies at a time. \u00a0These birds, so much more than the robin for me, are signs that spring is really here. \u00a0Yes, it&#8217;s still cold, windy &amp; snowy at my house, but the Red-winged Blackbirds give\u00a0me hope.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"northern flicker.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/flicker-photo.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just 50 our so yards down the road I finally caught sight of two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Northern_Flicker\/id\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Flickers<\/a>. \u00a0These woodpeckers have been in my neck of the woods with their familiar call &#8211; which sounds to me like <em>qwer, qwer<\/em> &#8211; \u00a0for well over a week, but today was the first day they let me actually see them.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"American Robin.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/pfeiffernaturecenter.org\/nature-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/robin-photo.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As planned, I walked only about 1\/4 mile and turned around. \u00a0When I got back to the bottom of my driveway, there in the trees where the Red-winged Blackbirds had been, was a similar number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/american_robin\/id\" target=\"_blank\">American Robins<\/a>. \u00a0These weren&#8217;t the first Robins I&#8217;ve seen this year, but it was the most in one place. \u00a0I turned up the driveway and there in the dogwood brush was another at least 20 Robins. \u00a0That&#8217;s a lot of Robins in one place!<\/p>\n<p>So I don&#8217;t care what anyone else thinks, for me today is Birds On The Move Day!<\/p>\n<p><em>I&#8217;ve used images from the Cornell Ornithology lab &amp; linked to their website. \u00a0Go there to learn tons about these and thousands of other birds.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I hereby declare today Birds On The Move Day. \u00a0I just (4:00PM) went out with my dog to get the mail, and was extremely fortunate.
