Instructions for self-led activities at Pfeiffer Nature Center:

Pfeiffer Nature Center staff is working remotely for the time being so our office in Portville is closed.  However, phone messages and emails will continue to be answered and staff will continue to visit the properties as usual.  Although programs have been canceled through May, Pfeiffer properties remain open for the enjoyment of our community. There are many challenges facing families right now and finding new ways to keep children preoccupied must surely be near the top of the list.  Pfeiffer is working to create a variety of activities for families as well as individuals to enjoy at the properties which will be self-led.

These activities will be available from sun up to sun down for participation at your leisure, allowing folks to be out in nature with a special mission in mind.  All activities will begin at the kiosk of the property mentioned in the activity.  The activities will be “hands free” to avoid contact concerns.  Instructions or anything needed to participate in the activity will be posted so they can be read without handling and cell phones can be used to take pictures of lists or maps when needed.  If paper and a writing tool is called for, we will let you know so that you can bring your own.  We intend to have the activities change regularly to give a great reason for return visits.  We will make activities available so long as our grounds are allowed to stay open and provided that folks keep current with and follow all rules put into place to keep us healthy.  This includes physical distancing, minimal group sizes and no crowding.  Be well and be safe and we look forward to your visit to Pfeiffer.

“Touring the Towering Trees” Self-led activity located at the Lillibridge Property beginning Saturday, April 11th

Our second activity is a natural history and tree identification walk called “Touring the Towering Trees”.  Pfeiffer Nature Center is fortunate to have many acres of old growth forest located on the Lillibridge property for our exploration and enjoyment.  During this outdoor adventure, we will share with you lots of fun facts about some of the largest and most grand trees at Lillibridge.  Your tour will begin at the Lillibridge kiosk where a map of the route you will follow through the forest is located.  Tree bark rubbings are a fun activity so be sure to bring some paper and crayons for the younger nature artists who may be along.  To do a tree rubbing, peel the paper off of a crayon, place a thin piece of paper against the tree bark and gently rub the side of the crayon on the bark until the pattern shows through.  When finished, note the differences in bark patterns between the trees.   We would love for you to share pictures and let us know how you enjoyed your visit by e-mailing naturalist@pfeiffernaturecenter.org  Enjoy the wonderful outdoors!

“What’s Bugging You?” Self-led activity located at the Lillibridge Property beginning Friday, May 1st.

Our third activity is a continuation of our “Touring the Towering Trees” natural history and tree identification walk.  “What’s Bugging You?” discusses some of the diseases and invasive organisms which our forests are facing today.  During this outdoor explore, we will focus on where these disease came from, what damage they are causing, what signs to look for and what you can do to help.  Your tour will begin at the Lillibridge kiosk and will follow the same route as the “Touring the Towering Trees” activity.   As with the “Touring the Towering Trees” activity, tree bark rubbings are a fun activity so be sure to bring some paper and crayons for the younger nature artists who may be along.

“Bird Search Bliss” Self-led Activity at Eshelman beginning Friday, May 15th.

The Planet Earth is home to an amazing number and variety of birds.  Over 10,000 different species of birds can be found globally with over 1,000 different species found in the United States of America.  Seeking out these wild treasures, a.k.a birding, is a hugely popular endeavor amongst nature enthusiasts.  Why?  Well, because birds are some of the most colorful and beautiful animals on the planet!  Because of its diverse habitat, the Eshelman property is a wonderful place to view birds.   For our next self-led activity, “Bird Search Bliss”, we have placed 24 photos of birds along the Bull Head Run and Hawthorne Lane trails of Eshelman.  Begin at the kiosk at Eshelman and enjoy a stroll along fields and woods to see if you can locate and identify all 24 native and commonly seen birds.  For added fun, we are having a contest.  All you need to do is e-mail your name and the number of birds that you were able to identify to naturalist@pfeiffernaturecenter.org or call the office at 716-933-0187.  You do not need to know all of the birds to enter the drawing. The prize for the names drawn at random is a coupon for a free ice cream cone.  Winners will be drawn and notified on Friday, June 5th.  Bring along a means of recording the birds and a field guide or a phone app may be helpful for beginner birders.  *A special note-this activity is a wonderful way to introduce young people to the exciting world of birding! We would love for you to share pictures and let us know how you enjoyed your visit by e-mailing naturalist@pfeiffernaturecenter.org  Enjoy the wonderful outdoors!
